You catch World Cup fever yet? Well, our community has. Following up on our successful community-powered competition The Auteurs World Cup 2009, our passionate base of cinephiles have put together Directors’ Cup 2010.

The Basics

128 directors have been picked to go against each other in single elimination match-ups.

The Bracket

Each director has a manager, who will select 1 different film for each match to represent their director. Matches will be decided by users/participants’ voting preferences for one film paired against another. Each match has been assigned a date that it will occur on.

The Voting

To participate all you need do is to have seen both films in each pairing to give your preference and to show up at the voting topic for that pairing, when it opens, to cast your vote. You cannot vote if you have only seen one film in the pairing.

The Purpose

The main idea behind the Directors’ Cup 2010 is to encourage the discovery of hidden treasures, promote neglected directors, question received wisdom, and also the fun of seeing directors—whether they be canonised masters or lesser known masters of equal ability—battle it out against each other.

So any enthusiasts do come on board. We’ve created a separate section of our Forum specifically for Directors’ Cup 2010 threads. Some are for matches and voting, others with results and tables, others for general comments, others for dicussion.
